“We do not have to make a massive change to our lifestyles immediately. To do so would overwhelm our good intentions. We need to look at our lifestyles and find ways to make small, incremental, but meaningful changes. Then we need to keep making changes”

June 2010 Progress Report

Sustain Winona is a collaborative endeavor by seven of Winona, Minnesota’s largest public and private institutions to develop an environmentally and economically responsible community in Winona. In the spirit of collaboration - Winona State University, the City of Winona, Winona County of Minnesota, Winona Area Public Schools, Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical, Cotter High School and Saint Mary's University of Minnesota - have all committed to partnering together to “walk the talk” in implementing sustainable environmental practices.

This endeavor has been brought forth by the realization of climate change and the consequences surrounding it. These institutions understand the bigger picture and know that to make any impact on a global scale that they must act first at locally. In a groundbreaking initiative unlike any other in the nation, these institutions have committed to seeking community-wide, joint certification in the ISO environmental management system. Environmental teams from each of the seven Sustain Winona member-institutions have been meeting regularly to identify and prioritize areas of focus for their institution.

The Sustain Winona ISO 14401 Goals are:

  • To reduce solid waste generated in the community by 25%.
  • Reduce electricity consumption by 10%.
  • Reduce fuel consumption by 5%.
